Effective and Energy Efficient Management of Network and Services: A Report on IM 2011

The main venues for the discussions of recent advances and prospective research directions in the areas of network, system and service management have traditionally been the IFIP/IEEE International Symposium on Integrated Network Management (IM), held in odd years, and the IFIP/IEEE Network Operations and Management Symposium, held in even years. The 12th edition of IM was held in the beautiful and historic Trinity College Dublin, Ireland, on May 23–27, 2011. The theme of IM 2011 was ‘‘Effective and Energy Efficient Management of Network and Services’’. While keeping with the tradition of network, system and service management disciplines, IM 2011 included fresh, new hot topics. Such new topics included management of cloud services and infrastructure, management of service oriented architecture, and energy management, including integrating powering and cooling of datacenters with the usual considerations to be taken into account when managing networks and distributed systems. The technical program committee consisted of 117 researchers and experts from worldwide academies and industries. Our call for papers attracted 139 paper submissions by authors from 38 different countries. Of these, a total of 40 submissions were accepted into the main conference program (acceptance rate 28.7%). For the first time in IM history, this year we decided to complement the main conference program with two special tracks; for each of which we issued a special call for paper, and had guest track cochairs. The two tracks covered the hot themes of Management of Cloud Services
