Final approach throughput analysis for conventional and enhanced air traffic management

This paper examines the sensitivity of final approach throughput for a single runway precision approach at a major domestic hub airport during a peak period "arrival rush". Simplified Monte Carlo simulations of conventional and decision aided final approach speed control have been developed to analyze approach throughput subject to constraints on missed approach rate, spacing minima, and control loop limitations. Throughput sensitivity to current systems and control methods are investigated to establish baseline results, and then additional analysis is used to establish incremental throughput benefits associated with potential system enhancements such as advanced decision support tools.
