Service Integration in DQDB MANs and Impact on ATM Interworking Performance

Abstract To accurately study the overall Quality of Service (QoS) in the ATM-DQDB interworking, the multiplexed stream exiting the ATM-DQDB Interworking Unit (IWU) must reflect the realistic traffic statistics of the Integrated broadband environment. This study achieves in accurately generating this stream by injecting not only ConnectionLess (CL), but also Connection Oriented (CO) traffic models to the DQDB MAN nodes. The multiplexed stream, whose statistics are influenced by both the DQDB access mechanism and the intranet traffic, enters the IWU. Through numerical evaluation of several access and service priority rules for different IWU protocol architectures, we identify all those factors that are essential for the design of both the CO DQDB functions and the ATM-DQDB interworking components.
