THE SHWARTZMAN PHENOMENON: A REVIEW WITH A CONSIDERATION OF SOME POSSIBLE DERMATOLOGICAL MANIFESTATIONS.

THE Shwartzman phenomenon, a phenomenon of altered tissue reactivity, is a reaction of considerable general biological interest. I t is possibly also the mechanism that produces certain dermatological manifestations the genesis of which has not so far been adequately explained. Since the Ameriean and English dermatological literature seems to have unduly neglected the Shwartzman phenomenon, a review would now appear to be timely. The phenomenon was flrst described in the late nineteen hundred and twenties by Gregory Shwartzman, now of Mount Sinai Hospital in New York (1936, 1937). In this diseussion it is probably best flrst to indicate how it is produced and then to consider its other properties. This review is concerned only with the major reasonably well-documented aspects of the phenomenon, and will not go into technical modiflcations and minutiae.
