Measurement modelling: foundations and probabilistic approach

The role of modelling in science and in measurement is first discussed. This is followed by a section on modelling in measurement, either for founding the meas- urability of a characteristic or for performing a measure- ment. A general probabilistic model of the measurement process, capable of addressing calibration, static and dy- namic measurement, is then examined. To demonstrate the application of the model, a working example is developed in detail. Lastly, the current status of measurement modelling is reviewed and commented.
