Soliton frequency-guiding by UV-written fiber Fabry-Perot filter in a 2 x 5 Gb/s wavelength-division multiplexing transmission over transoceanic distances

We report the first experimental demonstration of frequency-guiding of soliton pulses by a UV-written photosensitive fiber filter in a multichannel system. Error free transmission at 2/spl times/5 Gb/s (bit error rate <10/sup -9/) was obtained over transoceanic distances by propagation in a recirculating loop. Numerical results confirm the reduction of the temporal jitter and are found to be in agreement with the experimental results. We obtained similar transmissions with a bulk type Fabry-Perot filter. Due to the fiber implementation and potential low insertion loss, the UV-written fiber filter can advantageously replace bulk components.
