Comparison of the Effectiveness of Two Antioxidants in a Broiler Type Diet

Abstract The efficacy of the antioxidant products Termox and Santoquin was tested in broiler feed stored under simulated field conditions in the summer in Texas. The feed was made with unstabilized vegetable oil (40% polyunsaturated) containing either no antioxidants, Termox added at 125 mg/kg, or Santoquin added at 125 mg/kg active ingredient. The feed was distributed equally among six galvanized metal cans which were placed outside for 42 days during the summer. The feed was sampled weekly for determination of peroxides, malonaldehyde (TBA assay), trans-lutein, and total xanthophyll pigments. Feeds treated with Termox and Santoquin showed equal and significantly lower lipid oxidation compared to the control feed.
