The cognitive process and its application within cockpit assistant systems

Modern cockpits with highly integrated and complex automatic functions often use inappropriate automation concepts and ignore human centered design. This leads to deficiencies in crew-machine-interaction. This paper introduces theories and a prototype of a cognitive system with human-life capabilities as the interpretation and diagnosis of the situation, planning and decision making to overcome the above deficiencies. Results from flight simulator test runs of a prototype system are presented. The paper concludes an out-line on how cognitive assistant systems can improve safety and can increase effectiveness and economy of intelligent transportation systems.
