Pedagogical and Psychological Impacts of Teaching and Learning in Virtual Realities

The concept of communicative and collaborative virtual realities of text-based MUDs (Multi User Dungeons) in the 1980s has developed further into complex real-time interaction due to ever more efficient computer hardware. This has led not only to the development of ever-growing target groups but also to the development of new perspectives in using it. The preferred applications are still digital games which act as a motor in technological development. However, in the meantime they have been complemented by the interpretation of virtual realities as platform for communication, marketing, and learning. This article will concentrate on using virtual realities for teaching and learning. It will focus on educational and psychological perspectives in exploring its potential and substantiate them through examples.
