STANDARDS AND PRACTICE FOR MULTI-DAY AND MULTI-PERIOD SURVEYS. IN: TRANSPORT SURVEY QUALITY AND INNOVATION

Multi-day and multi-period travel surveys are necessary to measure and report variability, changes, and trends over time, and they are also needed to capture seasonality effects, differences in weekday versus weekend travel behavior, weekly or longer period rhythms of behavior as well as infrequent or rare behaviors. A multi-day survey is conducted with the same person, or household, or vehicle over multiple days, for a continuous period. Two types of multi-period surveys are distinguished as follows: 1) repeated cross-section surveys (same survey at intervals in time applied to different respondents); 2) panel surveys (same survey at intervals in time applied to the same respondent). The chapter describes standardized procedures for each typical survey phase, and discusses the following survey design issues: duration and timing, survey instrument design, sample design, data collection procedures, survey execution and data coding. Some quality performance standards are also included.
