In this paper the new rail-gap inspection system is described. It is now generally admitted that the present management of railway maintenance calls for improvement. Traditionally, many works of monitoring the safety and inspecting the rails have been dependent on human visual observation. For track maintenance, we have proposed two steps of improvement that replace the traditional patrol inspection. One is a new measuring device which measures and records rail-gap data efficiently. The other is a new automatic measuring system by computing image data of the rail-gap. Experiments on them prove the feasibility of these methods.
