Fiber Bragg Grating Design for Photonic-Enabled RF Cancellation

As the frequency spectrum becomes increasingly crowded, wireless devices could greatly benefit from sensing network traffic on different bands. This capability is enhanced by including Simultaneous Transmit and Receive (STAR) technology, which allows users to additionally detect on their own transmit channel. RF cancellation is a critical component of many STAR systems, and has recently been extended to operate over 1 GHz of instantaneous bandwidth. These wideband cancellers utilize photonic components, specifically Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs), to provide tunable time delay elements within compact packages. This paper investigates the critical parameters of a FBG within a photonic-enabled RF canceller, and presents the results of an 80-tap design that can greatly advance the development of future STAR systems.
