NEUTRON YIELD FROM PROTONS AND DEUTERONS OF MOMENTA BETWEEN 0.85 AND 1.7 GeV/c TOTALLY ABSORBED IN LEAD.

Neutron yields from protons and deuterons accelerated by the Birmingham synchrotron were measured at a series of momenta up to 1.7 GeV/c in a lead target 10 cm diameter and 60 cm long. The observed yield from deuterons is greater than that expected from two protons each having one half of the deuteron energy but is close to that which can be deduced from the measured proton yield on the hypothesis that stripping reactions are the predominant processes involved in the first interaction.
