HELP WHERE IT'S NEEDED MOST.

This article describes the work of Highways Agency Traffic Officers on motorways in the West Midlands region of the UK. Under newly-granted powers they can stop and direct traffic, place and operate traffic signs and assist in easing congestion around incidents, freeing police officers to concentrate on criminal activity. Officers wear high-visibility uniforms and travel in clearly marked vehicles, which carry a full range of traffic management equipment and are capable of towing cars or light vans off the road. The traffic officer service is expected to expand to the majority of England's motorways.
