Computer vision technology has the potential to address a broad range of tasks of significant economic and social value to mankind. However the construction of working systems present real difficulties, not just due to limitations of the technology, but also because these limitations are not well understood. This chapter describes some recent experiences, both positive and negative, in trying to apply computer vision technology. A contrast is made with practices in other engineering fields that have a solid record in building usable systems.
