On support properties of Lp-functions and their Fourier transforms

We give a criterion for the intersection of two projections in Hilbert space to be a projection of finite-dimensional range. This criterion is applied to Schrodinger operators in L2(Rn) and to the problem of determining whether there are functions f in Lv(Rn) such that both f and its Fourier transform have prescribed support.
