A new turn for rotary-valve engines

This article examines new work applying the rotary valve concept to internal combustion engines. A nitralloy spherical valve that interacts with a carbon-ceramic pressure-activated seal brings the idea closer to commercialization. Several prototypes have been developed for application to single-, two-, four-, and six-cylinder engines. The design also provides for decreased fuel consumption, increased available horsepower, fewer emissions and fewer oil changes.
