Creating Public Space in Cyberspace: The Rise of the New Community Networks

AbstractThe rapidly falling prices of computer and communications technology have made possible community networks that address the needs of the community. While they have generally been run by volunteers and made available free of charge to users, this paper argues that in the long-term community networks may need to form strategic alliances with other institutions as they will need funding for ongoing development.
