A New Viscosity Enhancer for Ophthalmic Preparations Devoid of Toxicity for Human Conjunctival Cells

Abstract The tolerability by human conjunctiva cells of a natural purified fraction from Tamarindus indica (TS polysaccharide) was studied. Cell viability changes after TS-polysaccharide and TS-polysaccharide in the presence of merfhiolate, timolol, and quinolones were studied at different times of cell exposure. This study was designed with the aim of simulating an in vivo treatment with ophthalmic preparations viscosized by the addition of the studied polysaccharide. From our results and from the rheological and chemical features of the polysaccharide, use of the TS-polysaccharide as a new viscosity enhancer is proposed.
