An examination of box models for air quality simulation

Abstract The simple box model was studied in detail by applying it to a number of physical situations. The study showed that the model has several shortcomings. These deficiencies were brought out clearly by comparing model results with those of a model based on the exact mass conservation equation. The latter model, which we refer to as the slug model, was applied to an actual stagnation episode. The agreement between observed and modeled concentrations indicated that the slug model could be used to provide estimates of variables needed in emission control action during air pollution incidents.
