Paardenmarkt Bank, a WWI ammunition dump site off the Belgian coast

Although this topic pops up in the press from time to time, surprisingly few people are aware that there is a WWI ammunition dump site off the Belgian coastal town of Heist. The figures are perplexing: at least 35,000 tonnes of German ammunition, at least a third of which are chemical shells, located at only a couple of kilometres from the esplanade! Yet there s till are many gaps in our knowledge and it turns out that these are not easy to fill.
