A Method for Teaching Statistics Using N-Dimensional Geometry

Abstract A concrete geometric method is described that enables the basic techniques of statistics (analysis of variance and regression) to be presented to students in a rigorous but elementary fashion. The few necessary ideas from geometry are summarized, and their use is illustrated by means of examples. The method works always with two objects (the observation vector and the model space) and two processes (projection of the observation vector onto the model space and application of Pythagoras's theorem).
