The basic method of H ∞ optimal control theory and its application to the design of power system stabilizer is presented in this paper. Studying the selection principle of weighting function and by use of the toolbox of MATLAB a power system stabilizer based on H ∞ control theory is successfully developed. Simulation results show that assorted with routine PID voltage regulator this kind of power system stabilizer possesses good dynamic character and regulation precision, and can restrain oscillation and improve dynamic stability of power system.
