An insight into wire rope geometry

Abstract Cartesian coordinate equations, which describe the helix geometry of wires within a rope, are presented. Through the application of differential geometry and the use of the engineering drawing development approach, problems associated with the three-dimensional helix geometry of wire rope can he solved, allowing analysis of the geometrical properties. The geometrical analysis presented in this paper applies to any rope with axisymmetric strands.
