Study of internal stresses intransformer windings due to lightning transient phenomena

Abstract This paper presents a method for the numerical determination of internal stresses in transformers due to lightning, in particular a suitable model of the transformer winding, special consideration being given to distribution transformers. An appropriate methodology for the capacitance and inductance calculations is also considered. The program EUIM (equivalent uncoupled inductive model) was developed in order to obtain a transformer equivalent circuit without coupled branches. The calculated values were verified by means of measurements made on experimental prototypes.
