Software Tutors Help Female Students Learn Programming Concepts Just as Well as Male Students

Several studies suggest a significant difference between women and men in their attitude towards programming as well as their attitude towards interacting with computers. So, it is reasonable to question whether women learn computer programming concepts as well as men do using software tutors. In order to answer this question, we analyzed data from the evaluation of three programming tutors used in Computer Science I. We found that 1) software tutors do help female students learn; 2) there is no statistically significant difference between the learning of female and male students using our software tutors. These results will be of interest to developers of software tutors, educators who use them, and Computer Science education research community.
