Strength Data Base for LRFD of Transmission Lines

Reliability-Based Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) has been proposed as a desirable alternative or a complement to the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC) for the structural design of high voltage electric transmission lines. While the LRFD method could already be used to advantage with the existing limited knowledge of the variability of the load and strength variables, the full benefits of the method will only be realized when additional statistical information becomes available. Recognizing the need for better information on loads and resistances, the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI) has supported and will continue to support research efforts that help better describe these variables. These efforts have already resulted in a comprehensive data base for wood poles.
