Reconstructing and Augmenting Architecture with Image-Based Modeling, Rendering, and Lighting

.Summary. This abst ract presents techniques and creative proje cts t hat use digital photographs of the real world to create realisti c 3D models and virtual cinematog­ rap hy of architectura l scenes. In thes e proje cts, images are used to dete rmine the structure, appearance, and lighting conditions of th e scenes. An important compo­ nent of this work is Facade , an inte ractive photogrammetric mode ling system that uses geometric primitives to model the scene. Subsequent work has been done to recover lighting and reflectance prope rti es of rea l scenes and to illumi nate synthetic objects with light captured from the real world. Th e projects presented include Facad e (1996), Rouen Revisited (1996), The Campanile Movie (1997), and Fiat Lux (1999).
