MOVING SHIPS SIDEWAYS

Expressions to describe how ships which are initially stationary will respond in the transverse direction to the action of external forces and moments applied to them are derived. In deriving the equations of motion, the two important motions, sideways drift and rotation, are assumed to be uncoupled, that is, each motion is assumed to be independent of the other, and forward or astern motion of the ship is assumed to be absent. Added mass considerations are discussed. Five examples are given based on a 100,000 dwt tanker.
