A review of lag-one Markov models for generation of annual flows

Abstract A Markov model was applied to a set of Australian streams using various existing procedures. The quality of the resulting simulation was assessed on the basis of how well the basic historical parameters, which are directly involved in the generation procedures, and the other historical parameters such as storage estimates, lowflow sums, and extreme events are preserved in the generated sequences. From the results suitable distributions are suggested for the use in the Markov model depending on the value of coefficient of variation.
