Systems models in development and psychoanalysis: The case of vocal rhythm coordination and attachment

This paper illustrates systems concepts through research on vocal rhythm coordination, which has been documented in both adult conversations and mother-infant interactions. Data on four month mother-infant and stranger-infant vocal rhythm coordination and the prediction of twelve month infant attachment are summarized, illustrating an optimal midrange degree of coordination. Implications for infant development and psychoanalysis are addressed.
