EFFECTS OF COLOR COMBINATION ON VISUAL ACUITY AND DISPLAY QUALITY WITH TFT-LCD

ABSTRACT The effects of color combination on the visual acuity and display quality using TFT-LCD have been studied. Factors such as contrast ratio, screen luminance combination and background color were investigated. Results showed that contrast ratio was the only factor that significantly affected the visual acuity. Visual acuity was improved upon increasing the contrast ratio. Screen luminance combination and background color did not significantly affect the visual acuity. Contrarily, contrast ratio was not significantly affected subjective rating score. Screen luminance combination and background color did have a significant effect on subjective rating. High screen luminance combinations was significantly greater than that for the low screen luminance combinations and subjects may favor cool colors than warm colors as for background color. Although the interaction effects between contrast ratio and screen luminance combination did not reach a statistically significant level, the visual acuity under low screen luminance combination improved slightly when compared to the high screen luminance combination upon increasing the contrast ratio. In short, there might be some interaction effects between contrast ratio and screen luminance combination. Further investigation is required in the interaction effects between contrast ratio and screen luminance combinations on visual acuity and display quality with TFT-LCD.
