Modified CLOS Intercept Guidance for Aircraft Defense Against a Guided Missile

This paper focuses on missile guidance methods for a 'defense' missile trying to protect a cooperative aircraft from guided munitions that have the same thrust and maneuvering capabilities as that of the 'defense' missile. A novel guidance law for the missile-to-missile intercept is developed by using two line of sight (LOS) rates: one LOS is constructed from the protected aircraft to the threat missile, and the other is from the 'defense' missile to the threat missile. The proposed guidance law is derived from optimal control theory. The resulting form is represented using a 'zero effort miss' with respect to an LOS from the protected aircraft to the attacking missile. Potential of the developed guidance law is demonstrated with some simulation results; performance comparison with a conventional guidance law is also presented.
