A software environment for teaching image processing

The intuition developed through experimentation provides a definite advantage for students learning image processing, a specialized branch of signal processing. The Vision and Image Processing (VIP) package was designed in 1985 as a software environment to support image processing research and education. Since 1988 VIP has been used for the lab portion of an undergraduate course on image processing in conjunction with Waterloo's Project BEACON. The authors explain the design of VIP, and discuss their experience with using the software for teaching.<<ETX>>
