Performance Evaluation ofMicro-Mobility Management UsingMobileIPV6

Handover management isoneofthemostcritical issues that mobility management protocols areconcerned with. This process becomes evenmorecritical inthecase ofMicro-mobility where theMobile Nodeisexpected to encounter frequent handovers. Weusetheonly mobility management protocol that hasbeenstandardized bythe IETF,namely Mobile IP,toidentify bottlenecks inthe handover process andtodetermine which ofthevarious Micro-mobility management protocols address these bottlenecks. This isachieved byproviding detailed delay measurements ofthehandover process forMobile IPv6 using anOPNET®simulation environment. Ourresults showthat themainbottleneck inthehandover process is movedetection. Further, weshowthat theonly micromobility protocol that addresses this bottleneck without suffering fromscalability issues isnotcompatible with Mobile IPv6and,asaresult, doesnotbenefit fromits manyimprovements. Weconclude that amoreappropriate solution would betouseofMobile IPv6with theaddition ofmovedetection optimizations.
