Elastic/viscoplastic problems using boundary elements

Abstract A complete formulation for the boundary element method applied to rate dependent material problems is presented. The only domain approximation involved is for the inelastic strains which are introduced into the analysis in initial stress form using piecewise linear interpolation functions. The proper procedure for obtaining the correct integral equation for stresses at internal points is reviewed and demonstrated. A series of examples is presented to outline the accuracy and applicability of the formulation, including elastoplastic, creep and viscoplastic problems.
