On the mechanism of intragenic recombination. I. The rII region of bacteriophage T4

A mechanically simple model of intragenic recombination is described. The expectations of the model are formulated in mathematical terms and these expectations are then compared with the extensive multifactor cross data available for the r II locus of phage T 4 . It is shown that theory and observation are in good quantitative agreement. The implications of the model are further discussed in a qualitative fashion with respect to the following problems: (1) Intergenic recombination, (2) the mechanism of phage DNA replication, and (3) phage heterozygotes.
