Design and Evaluation of a Wireless Sensor Network for Monitoring Traffic

The real-time detections of road parameters, such as traffic volume, velocity and time occupancy, are essential for ITS. Traditional systems are unable to meet the requirements of deployment convenience, detection accuracy, and overall cost. The design and implementation of a traffic monitoring system based on WSN technology is described including the system architecture design and hardware platform. Efficient algorithms for detections of traffic volume, velocity, lane occupancy and for vehicle classification were developed. The system was evaluated with performance data collected from on road experiments. For the covering abstract see ITRD E140665.
