Static and Dynamic cues in vowel production: a cross dialectal study in Jordanian and Moroccan Arabic

Theaimofthispaperistoexaminetheroleof� dynamiccues�(i.e.�formantslopesobtainedfroma� linearregressionanalysis)� incomparisonwith� staticone�(i.e.�voweltargets)�intheclassificati on� ofJordanianandMoroccanvowels,� using� DiscriminantAnalysis.� 10� speakersperdialect� producedalistofvowelsinC 1VC 2,�C1VC 2V,�or� C1VC 2VCwords,�whereC 1�andC 2�wereeither�/ b/,� /d/,�/d�/�or�/ k/,�andV,�eachvowel.�Resultsshowthe� possibilityofvowelseparationbetweenboth� dialectsforaspecificconsonantalenvironment.� Usingdynamiccuesimprovesthecorrect� classificationratesofabout� 5%� forMoroccan� Arabicand�13%�forJordanianArabic.�
