Improvement of Growth Rates of Plant Cell Cultures

From the viewpoint of biotechnological application, the improvement of the growth rates of plant cell cultures can not be discussed separately from that of the yields of some substances, the production of which is the purpose of the cultivation. The acceleration of cell growth does not always result in the productivity improvement of some desirable components in the culture. At the present stage of plant cell cultures, however, the far slower growth of plant cells compared with that of microorganisms seems to be the main obstacle to the application of plant cell cultures. Accordingly, this review will be confined to improving the plant cell growth irrespective of the cell components, with emphasis on our research of tobacco cell cultures.
