Text Generation from Semantic Representation

Until the end of 1987, generation was not a goal of the acord project. As a result, the specifications for the acord system were written with an analysis-based system in mind rather than for a system which would allow for both analysis and generation. Furthermore, there were a lot of shortcuts within the specifications, like mapping similar words to the same semantic, or mapping complex information to atoms, which were aimed at facilitating analysis but which makes it in some cases impossible to design a generator which would generate adequate sentences from some input semantic representation. In 1987 when it was decided to augment the acord prototype with generators for French, English and German, the situation was the following.
