Analysis of Chinese driver's lane change characteristic based on real vehicle tests in highway

This paper analyzes driver's lane change characteristic in highway based on real vehicle tests, including vehicular state, inter-vehicle state and driver's behavior during lane change. Analysis of variance is adopted to research the vehicle and inter-vehicle states such as longitudinal velocity, relative distance, relative velocity, time headway and inverse of time to collision. The statistic of lane change frequency, turn signal usage and rear mirror usage are studied to understand the driver's behavior. The results show that in the lane change period longitudinal acceleration mainly ranges from -1m/s2 to 1 m/s2, and rear view mirror usage is round 70% of the whole lane change times. The research work can provide references for the development of lane change assistance system in respect to lane change decision, collision avoidance and controller design.
