MUCOUS SUBSTANCES OF EXCRETORY ORGANS: A COMPARATIVE STUDY *

Mucoid substances are well known to occur in the urine. A functional role has been suggested for them as protective colloids in the prevention of stone formation (Butt, 1952). Although rigorous proof has not been offered it is likely that in humans, excreted acid mucopolysaccharides are of extrarenal origin and enter the urine via the glomerular filtrate or by tubular secretion (Kerby, 1954). We think it of interest to report our observations on mucoid substances of intrarenal origin, primarily of the collecting tubules.
