Cold binary fission and the pseudo- SU(3) symmetry

We investigate the cold binary fission processes of heavy nuclei from the microscopic viewpoint of nuclear structure, based on the pseudo SU(3) shell model scheme. As an example we consider the possible binary fission modes of the nucleus, some of which have recently been observed experimentally by Hamilton and co-workers. These fission modes turned out to be forbidden in the approximation of the leading representation. The forbiddenness of different fission channels is analysed quantitatively.
