AbstractThe degree of innovativeness and innovation success serve as strategic target and result measures in innovation management. Whether their relationship is positive and linear remains an unanswered question, especially as both theoretical reasoning and empirical results suggest a more complex relationship. However, it can not be ruled out that the lack of relationships (or negative findings) between the degree of innovativeness and innovation success may result from conceptual or methodological problems in the relevant research. Thus future research needs to account for these deficiencies. Furthermore, we suggest that the dominant project perspective in studying and managing innovations needs to be supplemented by a portfolio perspective.
