Color pictures using the zero diffraction order of phase grating structures

Abstract A new scheme for encoding color pictures as multiple phase grating structures is described. Using the zero diffraction order, the pictures are read-out with conventional optics such as those used in slide projectors and microfiche readers. The recordings can be fabricated as surface relief structures and then replicated economically by hot embossing into thermoplastic sheet. Initial experimental results show that colorimetry and resolution are comparable to those of conventional subtractive color processes.
