Key Issues for the Economic Viability of Magnetic Fusion Power

This report presents an overview of fusion electricity generating costs relative to coal, fission, and renewables. The magnetic fusion costs are benchmarked by comparison with those for ITER. The overall conclusion is that the likely economic performance of fusion, combined with its excellent safety and environmental qualities, makes it a serious contender as one of the few major contributors to mid-21st century electricity generation. 19 refs., 5 figs.
