Discussion of ''Proposals for limit states torsional strength design of wide-flange steel members'' 1

The paper presents proposals to evaluate the torsional strength of wide-flange steel members. The discusser questions the correctness of the proposed design equations, as they apparently violate the principles of structural mechanics. It must be emphasized that the Canadian steel standard, CSA S16 (CSA 2001) has been a design source for many projects operating nationally and internationally with billions of dollars in capital cost and design liabilities. It will be shown that the random ‘‘copy’’ and ‘‘paste’’ philosophy used by the author to develop these equations virtually leads to design errors.
