Recent trends in intelligent techniques to power systems

Power systems engineers have always faced numerous problems with complex interconnected power systems. In attempts to solve these problems, many methodologies were tested and implemented. AI techniques being one of them, have gained much recognition since last three to four decades. AI techniques are intended to embed human intelligence into machines so that machine can think intelligently like human beings. They were mainly applied in optimization and control problems of power systems. In decision-making processes, knowledge discovery and knowledge management techniques are continually supporting AI techniques. New techniques, which sprouted up just few years ago, were also used in solving power systems problems. More complex problems demanded combination of techniques, even hybridization of techniques have appeared. In this paper, an attempt has been made to discuss various AI techniques and their present day applications in solving power systems problems.
