Physics-of-failure based reliability technology is a kind of technology which studies the failure regularities from the failure reasons and failure mechanisms of the product, and uses these mechanisms and regularities to predict, prevent, diagnose and repair those failures. This paper introduced the development of physics-of-failure based reliability technology from the demands of equipment development, elaborated the basic theories of physics-of-failure based reliability, including physics of failure and stress damage theory, discussed the design and analysis method of physics-of-failure based reliability. Then some popular physics-of-failure based reliability engineering technologies were recommended, reliability design and analysis technology, reliability enhancement testing technology, accelerated reliability testing technology and their applications in equipment development were presented. At last, two urgent basic problems accompanied with the equipment development were proposed, system reliability axiomatic design theory and product stress damage model.
